Provide and evaluate a blueprint of a true B3G Framework supporting secure, personalized pervasive services built on the related network and service infrastructures for the mobile user. Design, prototype and validate the necessary infrastructure and components for efficient distribution of services over diverse network technologies beyond 3G. Enable the user to interact with devices in their environment and to have personalised access to feature rich services and applications, including ones based on pervasive computing, intelligent context-awareness and extended personalisation. Relate application-level concepts such as “personalized user session” to network-related concepts exploited in mobility such as user profiles with Authentication, Authorisation, Accounting, and Auditing (AAAA) information. Provide automated configuration and management including seamless adaptation to the dynamically changing user, network and service context; thus extending context-awareness to of the network and service infrastructure. Provide a robust architecture for mobility extended to ad-hoc, mobile networks, and mobile ad-hoc networks, opening the inherent possibilities in a variety of networking technologies and in particular for the integration of mobility with broadcast.

As mobility becomes a central aspect of our lives in business, education, and leisure, the project addresses the rapid technological and societal changes with proliferating technologies and services that have resulted in complex and confusing communications environments for users and network operators. It rethinks fundamental technology and business issues and thus targets usable and manageable communication infrastructures for the future. The project used a user-centred, scenario-based and operator-driven approach to address user and business needs building on five key concepts:
Mobility was supported in an integrated manner, both at the level of pervasive, personalized applications, and at the network services level. Mobility concepts were extended to technology areas not yet available in mobile form, e.g. DVB-broadcasting and MPEG-21, and by relating application-level concepts such as "personalized user session" to network-related concepts exploited in mobility such as user profiles with Authentication, Authorisation, Accounting, and Auditing (AAAA) information.

Advanced mobility management, in particular handover candidate discovery, supporting intelligent handover target and interface selection, as well as efficient operation of mobile-initiated and network-initiated handover and separation of local and global mobility Integration of secure ad-hoc and wireless sensor networks for vehicular and other Daidalos scenarios with special emphasis on security, privacy and charging considerations Developing the Virtual Identity (VID) concept that supports enhanced privacy including initial prototype of an identity broker Coordinating the overall heterogeneous networks work package Work Package 2 in Phase 1 Coordinating Work Package 1 that was responsible for technical co-ordination between the other technical work packages in Phase 2.

Empower users to gain ubiquitous and conventional access to new services seamlessly and with less effort, making use of a variety of network technologies that are transparently available in more and more locations. Benefit European operators and manufacturers from the evolution of today's worldwide DVB and GSM/UMTS adopter community towards making this Beyond 3G world a reality. Enable Daidalos operators to gain a strong strategic position both with respect to their customer and manufacturer base and their own business perspectives – equally supporting the European position. Provide services that are currently seen as separate transparently over federated heterogeneous networks, such as making broadcast services available over non-broadcast technologies Enable participating industrial partners to enhance their product portfolio.
